The magic of children’s theatre was brought to life at the Madinat Jumeirah Theatre over the weekend with the wonderful performance of How to Catch a Star by the UK’s Blunderbus Theatre Company.

In the current heat, an escape to the theatre is a lovely way to spend time with young children, and bring to life little imaginations in a creative way.

The show is based on Oliver Jeffer’s picture book How to Catch a Star, a story that invites the audience of youngsters aged 3 to 7 years on a special journey to find a starry friend.

This colourful stage production recreates the world of a little boy who loves stars and wishes he could have one of his own. The three-cast production uses puppetry, catchy dialogue and drama to involve the young audience in the story.

At times it was like a pantomime — the youngsters responded to the actors by pointing, waving their hands or shouting back to the boy on stage as he told his story.

It’s not easy to keep such a young audience in their seats, but the Blunderbus team engaged and enthralled them with music and the clever telling of a beautiful children’s story.

Few children aren’t fascinated by the stars, and this adventure brought them along on the young boy’s quest to catch a star. With lovely stage props, including a boat, a tree, a house, a rocket and of course, lots of stars, it was a delight for the smallest of senses.

Blunderbus Theatre Company brought this show to Dubai after touring in the UK. If you missed it this time around, the company returns again at the end of the year for a performance of The Very Snowy Christmas at the Dubai World Trade Centre.
