The year 2009 has brought with it some unique challenges. This is besides the acrobatic skills that I had to surf and then master, in order to get in to my favourite T-shirt that had somehow dropped 2 sizes post my Christmas and New Year eating binges.
Now I am no Mr. Webster of the Dictionary fame but I fairly do know the English language and its multi-tasking usage pretty well. For example, I do know that Q is not only an English letter but that it also does part-time as the phrase to describe the line outside the ATM machines on pay day. I also know that it once, probably, shared a very romantic relationship with U. And Genius Q, the man who invents hitech bond gadgets, for some odd reason never appeared in the latest installations of James Bond – both Casino Royale and Quantum of solace while Madame M continued her omnipotent streak.
But have you ever heard of an articulated bus? Well, I saw one yesterday on the Dubai roads! Risking limb and life, I raced to its front to see its mouth. Obviously it was called articulated bus because it could articulate, duh! But seeing nothing resembling a motor mouth, I boarded it. The only thing articulating to me was the creak of its chair. And so, I learned another new multi-tasking word.
I better be taking notes though, because soon afterwards, I saw a painted signboard in Bur Dubai that read: Caution. Men working On Bottoms. I looked around to see those fortunate or unfortunate as the case may be, men. Instead I found nothing hanky-panky to suggest any untoward activity in progress. So I called the supervisor-type guy who was standing near the signboard and asked him what precisely I had to be cautious about. He just pointed below. Sure enough there were some men working on the drainpipes below the ground. Bottoms up to that, what say?
