From the heart: Fathers, my forever compass

My name is Yaash Chopra. I was born in Dubai and have spent all 14 years of my life here. I’m a published author and have written three books. I also started a project with Saira Gulamani, founder of DoYourBit, to support kids of inclusion.

I love sports and am a student at Jumeirah College. I’m grateful to be born in this city and to be studying at such a wonderful school, where I truly look up to our principal, Nicholas Brain, who mentors us like a father figure. When I close my eyes, I always hear the words of my grandfather: “Life is what you make of it, and hard work and focus never fail.” He has always been my inspiration.

Today is Father’s Day, and I think it’s a good time for all of us to reflect on who the father figure in our life is, the person we truly admire and look up to. For me, it’s both my dad and my grandad. My two pillars of strength. For others, it might be an elder brother or another male figure in the family. And for some, it may be their mother, playing the role of both parents. Let’s raise our hands in gratitude and give these people the respect and honour they deserve for helping shape who we are today. Let’s remind them how special they are and how much we appreciate everything they do.

My grandfather’s name is Anil Marya. He completed his engineering and Master’s from the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, Class of 1977. A few years later, he moved to the Middle East and founded his own construction firm. He’s seen many phases in his career, always standing strong and building a solid foundation for the next generation. He taught me everything, from walking and talking to being true to myself.

He’s always encouraged me to speak my mind and heart. He’s been my backbone in all my achievements and inspired the title of my third book on Amazon: Life is Limitless. His values of honesty, humility, and kindness are deeply rooted in me.

My father, Tarun Chopra, graduated from London Business School and then moved to the Middle East just before I was born. He has worked hard to give us the best life possible.

I’d also like to thank Sunny Varkey, founder of GEMS Education, whose vision and leadership make him a true role model for students like me.

Their love, strength, and support are my centre of gravity. Fathers are truly our friends for life.
