The deserts of Rajasthan and the vibrant costumes of its women have always fascinated Malayalam director Jayaraaj. With his new film, Camel Safari, he fulfils that dream.

Arun Shankar, a Delhi model and son of former actor Shankar Mohan, plays a Rajput prince in the story while newcomer Pankaja Menon plays Diya, a student from the south Indian city of Mangalore, who, on a visit to Rajasthan, falls in love with him.

His love story is different, says the director, credited with several national awards and international awards.

“Love stories often have the man pursuing the woman of his dreams,” said Jayaraaj. “In this film, it is Diya who tries to win the heart of the prince who is already engaged.”

Shot mainly in Bikaner, Jaisalmer and Jodhpur, Jayaraaj promises a grand visual treat, especially with scenes shot amid the Pushkar Mela, the famed camel and livestock fair.

The film, with music by Deepankuran, also touches on the controversial issue of honour killings, still prevalent in north India today.
