Our summer binge pick, Koode: An emotional film on love, family and loss
How do you ever come to terms with grief?
Does it lessen over time, or do you simply learn to grow around it?
Prithviraj and Nazriya’s film Koode explores the many faces of grief—not just the loss of loved ones, but also the sorrow of growing up too soon, the heartbreak of being separated from family, and the heavy weight of family burdens. It’s the grief of never truly knowing your sibling.
Koode centers on Joshua’s return home. His discomfort with his parents is palpable as he comes to attend his sister Jenny’s funeral. At first, he seems detached—he barely knew her. But as the story unfolds, Joshua ‘rediscovers’ Jenny in an old ambulance van that once transported her between hospital and home. This marks the beginning of a sibling relationship, revealing where Jenny fits in the complex puzzle of Joshua’s fractured life. It’s a chance to reconnect, even if it feels unreal, strange, and impossible. As Josh confronts the complications of his past, he also learns about Jenny’s. And the ending: It lands like a gut punch—you find yourself hoping Jenny might still be alive.
Koode is a deeply layered film, yet sometimes light-hearted thanks to the warm chemistry between Prithviraj and Nazriya. It’s about the messiness of relationships, the fears we bury until we become numb, and, finally, the fragile hope for peace.
