Set in the cursed village of Chandrapur, Maa blends Indian mythology with horror
Dubai: Move over power couples—Kajol and Ajay Devgn are back at it, but this time, they’re kicking up a storm (literally) behind the scenes. In the upcoming mythological horror film Maa, the Bollywood duo may not share screen time, but their creative fingerprints are all over this eerie venture. Kajol stars. Ajay produces. And both seem hell-bent (pun intended) on making your nightmares cinematic.
In a recent interview with ANI, Kajol sang praises for her husband’s producer chops. “He’s a very hands-on producer,” she said, clearly impressed (and slightly exhausted) by his micromanaging tendencies—from script and soundtrack to the VFX demon lurking in the shadows.
“Shooting VFX is a different game,” she added, giving Ajay credit for obsessing over the gory details. We wouldn’t be surprised if he personally approved every frame of that daitya’s demonic snarl.
So what’s Maa about, anyway?
Set in the cursed village of Chandrapur, Maa blends Indian mythology with spine-tingling horror. A sinister force—think ancient demon, not petty ghost—is demanding young girls as sacrifices. Enter Kajol, playing a protective single mother who stumbles into this hotbed of supernatural chaos with her daughter. But instead of running, she rises. Fiercely. Ferociously. Goddess Kali-style.
In what’s being touted as one of her most intense roles yet, Kajol transforms from maternal protector to divine punisher. “I never thought I’d do a horror film,” she admitted, but Maa clearly tapped into something primal. As more girls vanish, her character unleashes inner fury, ready to battle darkness tooth and trident.
Directed by Vishal Furia (of Chhorii fame), written by Saiwyn Quadras, and produced by Ajay Devgn, Jyoti Deshpande and Kumar Mangat Pathak, Maa is poised to be more than just screams and shadows. It’s about motherhood, mythology, and monstrous evil—and Kajol stands at the fiery center of it all.
And if you're wondering whether this horror trip is all bark and no bite, Kajol's got you covered:
“Maa ki kasam, humne achi film banai hai,” she said with a laugh.
We’ll take your word for it, ma’am. Maa hits theatres on June 27 in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Bengali. Expect rage. Expect myth. Expect Kajol to bring the wrath of Kali like you’ve never seen before.
