Dhaka: Violent clashes between students over the World Cup football overnight forced closure of premier Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) indefinitely as some 12 undergraduates were injured.
"The university has been closed for an indefinite period after yesterday's clash" in line with the decision of an emergency meeting of the BUET administration with acting vice-chancellor Habibur Rahman in the chair, spokesman of the premier university Shah Alam told Gulf News.
He added that both male and female inmates of the university dormitories vacated their halls on Sunday as ordered by the administration after the clash that erupted over the announcement of a scheduled two-week summer vacation.
Witnesses earlier said students went on a rampage through the campus on Sunday demanding term be cut short so they could watch World Cup matches. The clashes began when a junior student slapped a senior as he opposed the idea.
