As a member of Dubai Hills Golf Club, I am regularly out on the course and my last outing was with three friends on a recent sweltering weekend.
Despite the searing heat, the condition of the golf course was, as usual, very good. Dubai Hills Golf Club is one of the best-conditioned golf courses day in, day out, 12 months a year in the UAE — what ever the weather. Even by their standards, it is especially good this summer
The tee decks are always in great condition and the fairways have a healthy cover of green grass with no burnt areas despite the mercury hitting 50C. The greens are also fast and true.
The bunkers are a bit hard at DHGC right now, whether that is by design, irrigation patterns or the type of sand in the bunkers, I am not sure.
We teed off at 3pm on Saturday and the weather was humid and nasty to begin with. But the cooler afternoon breeze soon kicked in and we had a pleasant round and were the last players to come of the 18th green.
During recent renovations, a lot of bushes have been removed — which helps when it comes to recovering those wayward shots in the waste areas, not only when it comes to lost balls but it also speeds up play.
Finally, the driving range at DHGC always frustrates me as I cannot use my driver due to the reduced length of the target area. While is may sound like a small gripe — and the weather was too hot to hit the range for a prematch loosen-up last time out — driving is the weakest part of my game and I really would like to let loose rather than use a net before we hit the first tee.
Still, I continue to go back time and again, and the impeccable conditions continue to impress.
