Shabnam optimistic despite World Cup snub for star all-rounder
Mumbai: Shabnam Singh was not expecting the axe to fall on her son Yuvraj who failed to find a place in the probables list for the 2015 World Cup.
Yuvraj, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh - the five seniors players - were omitted from the provisional list for the World Cup. It is being discussed that these players might never again play for the country.
However, Yuvraj’s mother is optimistic.
Speaking exclusively over phone on Friday, she said: “What can we do if he is not chosen. I was expecting his recall and didn’t think he would be omitted. But it is not the end of the road for him. He is a fighter and will return”.
Shabnam has been a pillar of strength for Yuvi, who will turn 33 next Friday.
“I shall try and make him realise that it’s just a part of the game and he will come out of it. He will be playing a Deodhar Trophy match in Patiala tomorrow. I am yet to speak to him, but take it from me that he is not considering quitting the game”.
In 2011, Yuvraj was on top of the world after he helped India win the World Cup. His performance in the series earned him the Player of the Series award.
“He also fought against cancer and similarly will fight for his place in the team”, Shabnam hoped.
