Dubai: When Lakshana first met Loki at a K9 rescue center in 2022, she couldn’t have imagined how one scared, silent dog would completely change her world.

"Loki was terrified," Lakshana recalls. "She had clearly been abused—how badly, not even the shelter could say. She was shy, nervous, and wouldn’t let anyone near her. But on our second day together, she quietly pressed herself beside me… and never left." That was the moment Lakshana knew: Loki was coming home.

But the road to healing wasn’t easy. For the first two months, Loki would cower under tables at the sound of footsteps. A gentle nudge would send her into a panic. She refused to go on walks and avoided everyone but Lakshana. Fear, it seemed, was all she had ever known.

And yet—hope is a quiet force. One hallway led to another. One ten-minute walk became forty. Slowly, the world grew a little less frightening. Her suspicion of strangers turned into cautious curiosity, and eventually, joyful affection. “Once she knows someone’s kind,” Lakshana smiles, “she won’t leave their side. And heaven help you if your hand isn’t scratching her!”

Now, nearly three years later, Loki is unrecognizable from the dog she once was. She squeals with excitement when Lakshana comes home, scratches at the door the second she hears footsteps, and curls up beside her on both stormy days and sick ones.

“She’s my shadow, my comfort, my heart,” Lakshana says. “I truly can’t remember life before her. I don’t think we can ever be grateful enough for the kind of love a rescue dog gives—so pure, so healing.”

Loki’s story is more than a transformation. It’s a reminder that love, patience, and second chances can turn even the most broken beginnings into the most beautiful lives.
