The government of Nigeria has been far too slow to react to the murderous mayhem of the supposedly Islamist group, Boko Haram. More than 160 people were killed this weekend in Kano, northern Nigeria's major city as bomb attacks and gun battles shocked the city's 10 million inhabitants.

The radical and violent Boko Haram's original aims were to get Sharia law applied across Nigeria but it seems to have shifted ground in its recent statements, lashing out at anyone who opposes it, including the Nigerian police and government, as well as the Christian groups which are mainly based in the south of the country.

President Goodluck Jonathan who has been strongly criticised for failing to act decisively against Boko Haram, has finally said that the killers will face "the full wrath of the law" but it is essential that he translates his rhetoric into action.
