A new federal building code will literally change the face of UAE cities by limiting the amount of glass on facades to no more than 60 per cent. This new green building code is due to take effect in 2014 and any new structures planned will have to meet its tough environmentally-friendly standards.

Technology is ever evolving. So too must construction standards, ensuring every building erected after 2014 is as green as possible. Water use needs to be limited. Glass and aluminium facades need to be energy-friendly. And proper insulation standards will help regulate temperatures, preventing the excessive use of energy. Air conditioning and air circulation systems need to be healthy and green, making the spaces as user friendly as possible.

Given our insatiable appetite for energy usage, every step needs to be taken to ensure our precious natural resources are conserved through the most effective architectural and construction principles.
