When a government fulfils its duty of providing excellent infrastructure by investing billions of dirhams to provide a superior quality of life to people, it also acquires the right to penalise those who abuse the infrastructure.

The recent case in point is of a 20-year-old individual who damaged the roads of Dubai with his high-level car stunts and as a result, was fined a hefty Dh500,000, had his driving licence confiscated, his car impounded and got two fines for reckless driving and driving a noisy vehicle.

These were in addition to the Dh500,000 fine. Dubai Police was absolutely right in asking the errant individual to compensate for the damage caused to the roads.

The lure of stunt driving is a commonplace issue with the young influenced as they are by cinema that often tends to celebrate the spirit of danger and recklessness.

But away from the reel world, this kind of behaviour is not only unacceptable, it is also a major disruptive force in society. It is the public’s duty and responsibility to ensure that they do not cross their limits and learn to discriminate between fact and fiction for their own good.
