Sitting on the fence can sometimes be painful, especially if the country doing it is North Korea. Since taking over as the country's new leader, Kim Jong-un has sent confusing signals on the country's willingness to restrain its nuclear ambitions.

The North's official media frequently refers to the likelihood of war breaking out.

Its announcement of a rocket launch next month has jeopardised a nuclear freeze deal reached only weeks ago with the United States.

This attitude has resulted in a credibility deficit which is not conducive to peace talks. It also raises questions on whether the new leader is really in charge or whether senior officials loyal to his father are calling the shots.

Whatever be the case, for peace in the region and for a stable Korea, it is important that the country comes to the table and negotiates what is best for it.
