Today marks a new era in Egypt's history as Egyptians cast their votes in the country's first free parliamentary elections. It is crucial that the elections go ahead in a peaceful manner. It is also important that these first genuinely democratic elections are successful and attract the full participation of all Egyptians who after decades of authoritarian government deserve a brighter future.

Hundreds of protesters remain in Cairo's Tahrir Square calling for an end to military rule. This is a legitimate concern and the military must heed the people's demands and hand over power to civilians. But the only way to achieve genuine change is through elections. It is deeply worrying that more than 40 people were killed when security forces tried to break up protests last week. The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces must ensure security and safety during the polls without killing tens of its own citizens.

Egyptians must move forward by showing up and voting for the parties they want to see in control. They have come a long way since successfully toppling Hosni Mubarak and they face major challenges before a full transition to democracy. Participating today is an essential step in the right direction.
