Despite the terrible news around us, and the wars that continue to rage in our region, there is so much to celebrate this Eid.

There are so many reasons to rejoice as families and friends gather this morning to share the joy, which Eid brings in. The continuing success of this young country, which offers a shining example to others in development, modernity, tolerance, first-rate governance and forward-looking leadership, gives its residents a million reasons to celebrate.

As hundreds of thousands of pilgrims descended last night and this morning from the Mount of Mercy to complete their Haj duties, UAE residents pray as well to keep this country safe and prosperous.

However, we shall not forget the less-fortunate in our region, whose societies have been suffering from civil conflicts or terrorism for the past five years. We are praying for peace in Syria, Libya and Iraq so their people can rebuild their war-torn countries and shattered lives.

As for Yemen, we hope on this day that the Iran-backed militias, Al Houthis and their allies, which illegally overthrew the elected government in September 2014, will come to their senses and heed the call of reason.

The interests of the Yemeni people lie in stopping the continuing Al Houthi aggression and implementing the United Nations resolutions so that people can start rebuilding the fractured nation, with the help of their neighbours in the Arabian Gulf region.

Gulf News wishes its readers a joyful Eid Al Adha and we hope that next year, we will be celebrating much more in this country and in the region.
