With effect from October 31, Dubai Airports will ban older aircraft from operating at Dubai International Airport. For anyone who lives in the shadows of these older, noisier airplanes, the move is bound to bring sweet dreams and sound slumber.

Older generations of aircraft use engine technology that, while safe, is noisier, less fuel-efficient and generates higher levels of emissions.

By banning these older aircraft from Dubai Airports facilities, the authorities are committing themselves to more environmentally friendly air travel, a vital part of Dubai's economy.

And with the recent crash in Sharjah of an ageing Boeing 707 cargo freighter, the dangers from older aircraft cannot be overstated. Maintenance costs are increased, greater time is spent ensuring these aircraft are airworthy, and their noise levels bring discomfort for all living near the flight paths.

Indeed, Emirates is committed to flying the most modern fleet in the Gulf, and other airlines that use the airport should also be held to the same high standard. With state-of-the-art planes coming on stream, those who want to compete with Emirates need to show the same commitment to the flying public.

Lower emissions make for a greener future for all. Banning old aircraft is a welcome step.
