The history of Gangnam Style’s rise to No 1

Released on July 15, the song that features Psy riding an invisible horse and brandishing an imaginary whip garnered 500,000 views. It went on to overtake summer anthem Carly Rae Jepsen’s Call Me Maybe to take the number one spot on Youtube’s Top 100 Music Videos for the week of August 28. Within two months, Gangnam Style was commanding 6 million views per day while Jepsen’s hit averaged at 1.5 million views each day.

On September 3 the number of views generated by “Gangnam Style” went past the five-million mark.

Gangnam Style also made it to the Guinness World record books when it overtook LMFAO’s Party Rock Anthem to become the most-liked video in YouTube history.
