Director and producer Michelle MacLaren says she’s still open to doing a superhero film.
MacLaren, who in 2015 pulled out of directing Wonder Woman due to creative differences (Patty Jenkins replaced her), said she’s receptive to various genres.
“I am interested in doing any film or TV show that has great characters or a great story, whether it’s a superhero or a great action or a great drama. I’m open to all of it,” said MacLaren at the 14th Dubai International Film Festival.
“It’s just important for me to have a really great story and very layered wonderful characters that you can feel for and the audience can connect with.”
MacLaren’s current roster of television work reads like a best-of compilation of dark dramas: The X-Files, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones and Westworld.
She also worked on Breaking Bad, for which she has won several primetime awards — she had met Vince Gilligan, the creator of Breaking Bad, when she was working on The X-Files, and the two shared a love of dark comedy.
“Vince and I joke that we’re both very twisted. We have twisted sensibilities,” said MacLaren.
But has she always been attracted to dark stories?
“If you had asked me that when I was a kid, I don’t think I would’ve said I would do that. I was a scared kid. Not in a bad way, but like any kid who gets scared at night, check the closet, under your bed,” said MacLaren. She described her interests as a director as “muscular, testosterone-driven” action.
“I love to go see romantic comedies, but I don’t think I want to make them,” she added.
