Being a big fan of Thai cuisine, I eagerly embarked on a visit to soi55 with my friend during dinnertime, right after a “mini dinner”.

Expecting the usual Thai-style setup, I found the grey, black and orange interiors unique and characteristically upscale in appeal. A big Buddha icon sat on one end of the counter behind us, and a collection of photos taken by the owner decorate the wall near the entrance.

We were promptly seated by the friendly crew who also waited on our order. A bit pressed for time, we ordered phad thai, nasi goreng classic and mango with sticky rice for dessert, and asked to have them served all at the same time.

Our host recommended we try a recent innovation he calls TMT. We had the cream dory version of the dish (they also serve hammour as a bigger option) that evening.

The phad thai came elaborately “dressed” in an egg weave of sorts, sprinkled with fresh bean sprouts on top. The nasi goreng classic came with the staple peanut sauce for the chicken satay.

Both dishes certainly pleased our palates; but the star attraction of our dinner was certainly the TMT – with the crispy-on-the-outside-tender-on-the-inside dory lying on a delectable sauce with a tamarind base, and sprinkled with thinly-sliced spring onions.

The meal included a bowl of rice in case the nasi goreng wasn’t enough to fill us up.

The mango with sticky rice could have tasted better with more coconut cream but it was just the right sweet to conclude our meal.

For our beverage, we simply had water as our dinner was heavy enough, and our taste buds already had their fill of a night of culinary adventures.
