An ode to the iconic French couturier, the exhibition is now open at Expo 2020
Dubai: Legendary French designer Jean Paul Gaultier’s new ‘Jean Paul Gaultier, from A to Z’ exhibition was recently opened at the France Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai. Dubbed a fully recyclable exhibition, the occasion provided fashion lovers the rare opportunity to meet the personable prêt-à-porter and haute couture designer in the flesh. The exhibition is curated by Thierry-Maxime Loriot.
"In some cities, the architecture only works well at night because of the lights, but Dubai is beautiful both during the day and at night-time," Gaultier said of his visit to the emirate.
According to the organisers, the ‘Jean Paul Gaultier, from A to Z’ exhibition, is more than just a trip down memory lane; it is a look back at the designer’s ethos behind every creation over the past five decades. The selected pieces represent Gaultier’s values of tolerance, humanity, inclusion and commitment.
While there are several conventional pieces on display, the, let’s say more unconventional, designs also shared the spotlight. For instance, there was dress crafted from a garbage bag and jewellery made from tin cans. Several pieces worn by celebrities such as Kylie Minogue and Madonna are also on display.
Jean Paul Gaultier who has had a stellar career launched his first collection back in 1976. Although his designs were viewed as too indulgent at the time, they received critical acclaim from fashion publications. Gaultier, whose creations have been worn by several celebrities and A-listers over the years announced that his collection that year would be his last for the runway.
‘Jean Paul Gaultier, from A to Z’ is open to Expo visitors until March 31, it will then be transported to Marseille, France.
