Abu Dhabi: A trio of homeschooled children took part in the History Bee and Bowl European (IHBB) Championships in Berlin on May 27-30, taking home the silver medal in the History Bowl competition.

The three students representing the UAE — Reham, 14, Arham Zia, 14, and Brycham Hall, 18 — are backed by Abu Dhabi Home Schoolers Association (ADHSA).

Competing against 30 schools from all over Europe, the trip also took home individual awards. Brychan came in second place in the geography bee under the individual bee events, and fourth place in the History Bee-Varsity level. Arham came in at first place in Sports and Entertainment Bee-Junior Varsity level, and second in the Varsity level.

IHBB is a dual history quiz competition held around the world, with ‘Bee’ for individual students and ‘Bowl’ for teams of up to four students. The history knowledge needed for the competition is not specific to any time or era, but can include any historical event from the beginning of time until date.

The team first took part in the Middle Eastern Regional in Dubai, where they succeeded in becoming eligible to compete in the Asia Championships in Hong Kong, coming in fifth place out of 38 teams. Since then, the team has continued to practise weekly through the school year, as well as participate in regional competitions in Dubai.
