There's something magical about Persia Persia - maybe it's the rich, shimmery drapes or its colourful mosaic walls. Add to that the flavours that engulf you in a heady mix of aromas, leaving you completely intoxicated. So, it was only apt that I headed their way in the company of my father, an avid foodie, for an iftar meal.

A little after sundown the place was bustling with families huddled over a lavish iftar spread. Our server escorted us to our table, while explaining the food layout. We began our gastronomic journey with a basket of fresh-from-the-oven breads and a plate of dates. After a quick stop at the juice corner, with Dad opting for the sweetened Jaleb (dates) drink and I for the slightly bitter Raw Cherry drink, we moved to the starters section. Despite a petite selection, each dish was strikingly impressive. Whether it was the mashed aubergine in a riot of herbs or the olives dressed in a rich yoghurt-pomegranate sauce, or the cubes of flavoured feta cheese, we were bowled over.

We then moved towards the soups and kebabs. While the thick broth of shredded meat and a clear, green soup proved delectable, a host of juicy chunks of spiced chicken, prawns and minced lamb teased our tastebuds. After giving our tummies a break and catching up on the much-needed father-daughter chat, we returned to indulge. The chicken in walnut gravy and cubed fish dunked in a spinach mash proved the perfect accompaniment for the fragranced herb rice. But it was the invigorating combination of mutton and rice that won all the accolades.

Among the desserts, the cream-filled mini cones and the traditional Umm Ali were outstanding.

It's the finesse with which food is created that commands a revisit.
