War Horse

Who's in it? Jeremy Irvine, Emily Watson, Peter Mullan, Tom Hiddleston
Rating 4 out of 5
The plot This movie feels like the films of yesteryear - a shamelessly sentimental piece of storytelling with a plucky young hero. Set during the First World War, it tells the story of a friendship between young lad Albert (Irvine) and a horse named Joey, who are parted when the horse is sent to war. We - the audience - then follow the animal, and in doing so meet the many faces - and consequences - of war.

A Separation

Who's in it? Leila Hatami, Peyman Moadi
Rating 4 out of 5
The plot Garnering a phenomenal 99% approval rating on RottenTomatoes.com, this poignant and gripping film tells the story of a marriage dissolving in the setting of contemporary Iran. As arresting and enrapturing as a great novel, the film features flawed human characters whose at first innocent decisions lead to struggles and strife - which sounds a lot like real life.

Hawthorne

Who's in it? Jada Pinkett Smith, Michael Vartan
Rating 3 out of 5
The plot Christina Hawthorne (Smith) is the no-nonsense chief nurse at a hospital in Virginia, who empathises with patients and their families after having just lost her beloved husband. In fact, she cares so much she often jeopardises her job and bends the rules to help (think Heigl's character in Grey's). A nice medical drama for those who like to see a blend of professional crises and personal problems.
