Arabic food is one cuisine that really satisfies my palate. On Saturday evening, I got a chance to experience another great iftar that offers really tasty Arabic dishes at the Barefoot Lounge Ramadan tent at Dubai Marine Beach Resort and Spa. They say if you want to find the best restaurant, go where the locals eat. Barefoot Lounge is definitely one that is frequented by many Emiratis (who accounted for the majority of guests on that Saturday evening ), as I found out on my recent visit.

In its 25 years of existence, the Jumeirah-based Dubai Marine Beach Resort and Spa has been known for its traditional Ramadan offerings and it really knows how to satisfy one’s cravings. The tent wasn’t as gigantic as one would have probably seen in many other venues, but it was a great setting for a more intimate dinner without the large crowds and noise, which I really hate when eating in a restaurant. And of course, there were no long queues. The tent is located right next to a beach, which adds a distinct character to the venue.

I started with the green pea soup, which I liked with its slightly sweet, thick, creamy, nutty and buttery taste. This time I skipped the fattoush and instead had some tabouleh and beetroot salad with corn kernels, which I tried out of curiosity. I’m not a fan of beetroot, but this one I definitely liked and wouldn’t mind getting a second serving.

I again had my all-time favourite ouzi, mixed moujanat, loubia with lamb and fatet djaj. As I’ve said, earlier, the cuisine here definitely has a distinct edge that draws diners back for more. But on this night, my personal favourite was the mixed moujanat, which reminded me of a local delicacy in my hometown in Cebu, Philippines, called empanada. The crust was crisp and complemented the minced meat filling.

I wrapped up the night with Arabic desserts — katayef, maamoul mad and my favourite, kunafa. The kunafa was delicious — it wasn’t too sweet and the cheese was just perfect. The traditional Ramadan sweet katayef also became a personal favourite and I was pleasantly surprised that it was not too oily. It was definitely a sumptuous iftar experience and I wouldn’t be surprised if I find myself visiting the restaurant again very soon.
