Having always considered restaurant ambience a little over-rated, the Dubai World Trade Centre’s Ramadan majlis was truly a first for me.

Strolling past modern-day burger and sushi joints before a quick left and a warm welcome, you are immediately taken on a cultural journey from the moment you enter the 600-capacity venue.

Traditional tents, atmospheric lanterns, stars on the ceiling, every detail has been considered down to the hay bales which would have fed cattle in Bedouin villages. With so much to look at it’s a good thing the food is enough to divert. The smell hits you before your eyes even have time to focus. Freshly cooked meats, curries and breads are prepared at live cooking stations through a window which you can only imagine has more to offer. It does.

A varied salad bar offers all the regulars and friendly waiting staff can not do enough for you, serving falafel, soup, bread and fresh juices direct to your table.

Adding a personal touch, head chef Atef makes his way around the tables and is more than keen to push the local dishes. Loukoumat is an Emirati dessert which is a bit like warm mini donuts. A warning: one is never enough.
