Outdoor play is essential for children. With the video games craze, kids are hardly getting any fresh air and exercise. So take your kid out to the playground.

However, beware of hidden hazards that can cause pain and sometimes permanent injuries. Those slides may be crooked, broken or the surface too hard.

"To avoid injuries caused by falls on unforgiving surfaces, make sure someone is always around to supervise your child," advises Janet Thomson, principal, Jumeirah International Nursery.

Thomson gives more tips:

  • Stay vigilant and close to your child ... For example, he may know how to use a slide but not know the best way to get off it once he reaches the bottom. So watch him carefully as he slithers to the bottom and help him up.
  • Children under the age of 5 should be strapped to swings to avoid falls.
  • Jungle gyms are best for children six years of age and older. Younger kids are too small to safely navigate the equipment.
  • Closely supervise children under 8 on the merry-go-round as the younger kids tend to lose balance when whirled around.
  • Seesaws are best reserved for kids aged 8 and above.
  • When taking your child for an outing, watch out for sharp points, corners or edges on equipment that can cut the skin. Also, remember that some metal surfaces, such as slides, can heat up enough - on hot, sunny days - to burn the skin.
  • Dress your child in close-fitting but comfortable clothes, free of drawstrings or other hanging material. Make him wear comfortable shoes and clean, dry socks.
  • Make sure he wears a cap to cover his head and apply sunscreen lotion on all exposed parts of the body.
  • Select an appropriate playground for your child.
