The American University of Sharjah recently kicked off its annual Ramadan Intercollegiate Sports Tournament on campus. More than 500 students from eight universities around the UAE are competing in football, basketball and volleyball matches.

Munketh Taha, director of student activities at AUS, said that the tournament is a tradition that AUS has held for nine years.

"We have kicked off the sports season for the new semester this year with this tournament," he said. " It's one way to welcome the new students to a new beginning."

Taking part in the tournament this year are AUS, University of Sharjah, Gulf Medical College, Bits-Pilani, Al-Ghurair University, Sharjah Men's College, University of Wollongong and Zayed University.

Taha added that these activities do more than help welcome students to the campus community – they engage students both physically and mentally.

"The tournament engages the students in activities that are beneficial and are a means to a healthy body and mind. We wish everybody good luck," he said.
