Nanday’s home in Jumeirah
The nanday parrot or conure nandayus nenday is a bird from the forests of South America and is a popular pet. In the mid-1990s, I saw the first nanday in the zoo compound in Jumeirah.
I often hear a small flock fly past the zoo in Jumeirah. Their voice is different from the two sub-continental parakeets we see in Jumeirah.
Recently, I was walking from Dubai Zoo to the main mosque in Jumeirah. I found at least three nanday parrots on the roof of a villa. Later I found them eating dates and other fruit from showy large flowers.
It's basically a green parrot with a black hood, a bluish flash on the neck and blackish wings, white eye-ring and pale, prominent bill.
The bird can be taught to speak a few syllables and perform tricks.
