Ever read something, thought it brilliant, neglected to write down the source at the time, and learned to regret it? I have and I still remember the day my comparative politics professor - the person who suggested I specialise in political science - taught us how to prepare a research essay.

'Use note cards,' he counselled. 'Write each idea you think might be useful on a note card, number each card, add the page number involved, and then record the bibliographical information for the source on a separate card, being careful to indicate which card numbers this source is related to. When you feel you have done enough research, you simply put the cards in a logical order and begin to write your essay, idea by idea. This card numbering system ensures you never lose track of the source of important research ideas.'

Finally, a system that works, I exclaimed! A revolution in research! Your PC makes this approach even more effective today, but if you want you can always go back to the good old note cards themselves. Thanks, Prof!
