Krrish 3, the latest in India’s first sci-fi celluloid series, is releasing across the UAE on Thursday. The superhero story was born with Koi… Mil Gaya in which Hrithik Roshan played a mentally challenged Rohit Mehra, whose life takes a 180 degree turn when he befriends an alien, Jadoo. Within days the boy who failed primary school becomes a genius, applying the super intelligence Jadoo endows him with to become a scientist working for the good of mankind.
The second twist comes in the sequel Krrish which launched the superhero – Krishna (played by Roshan again) – Rohit’s son, who goes in search of a man to redeem his father’s honour but, as a bonus, finds his father too.
“I had a vision when I made Koi… Mil Gaya. But it took me one and a half films before a superhero was created and with Krrish 3 I’ve taken the science fiction element forward by creating a supervillain,” said a proud Rakesh Roshan, the film’s director, during a press conference a couple of weeks ago at The Oberoi Dubai.
And now, the third installment of the saga. Rakesh is hopeful that the film will reach the Rs10 billion (Dh599 million) milestone at the box office, instead of making just Rs1 billion or Rs2 billion.
Well that’s still to be seen as the film releases in the UAE today, even on the IMAX at Meydan. Here are a few facts you may wish to know of before heading to the theatre to watch the film.
Homegrown visual effects
Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies VFX studio and Pixion Studio are the tech geniuses behind the special effects for Krrish 3 at a whopping price of approximately Rs260 million.
“The special effects in the film are totally homegrown,” Hrithik Roshan said. “We have tremendous talent in our country and my father wanted to give an opportunity to them. [However]… when my father started the shooting of the film he began with all the special effects first. Because, despite the fact we have ample talent, our artists are not yet prepared and trained as they don’t have enough exposure and experience as compared to the world market. Considering that they might need bit more time, my father shot everything first and gave them almost one and a half years for the special effects.’’
iKrrish?
Krrish 3 is the first Indian film to tie up with Apple Inc to offer content, including songs, video and apps on the iStore.
Krrish’s Kaal
Hrithik Roshan has said he wanted to portray Kaal but his father was adamant that Vivek Oberoi should play the character as he suited it better.
“Hrithik looks like a superhero, performs like a superhero,” said Rakesh. “I always wanted Vivek for it. He played the role brilliantly and beyond my expectation.”
The one new thing the film will introduce is Oberoi in a negative character, a role he finds quite exciting. Villains have always been “big” in Roshan’s films and this is no exception.
“Yes, he’s heavy, what, with his metal costume and all,” said Oberoi, who’s playing a negative character for the first time. “It was very tiring being in that costume, hanging from ropes and against a big actor like Hrithik. But it was all worth it”.
Krrish 3 was almost shelved
After the success of Krrish, the Roshans wanted to make a sequel. However, the lack of a story held them back. In the meantime, Rakesh made Kites, again with Roshan in the lead, which incidentally bombed at the box office. It, however, did give Rakesh an idea for the plot of Krrish 3.
Similarly they have shown an interest in a second sequel.
“If this does well, we may make Krrish 4. We have left a hook for it [in Krrish 3],” Rakesh reportedly said during the promotion tour.
Krrish 3 v X-Men
The look, costumes and the feel of the film is similar to X-Men. The role of a mutant played by Kangana Ranaut will reminds you of Halle Berry’s character in the Hollywood blockbuster. But Roshan is not concerned.
“Comparisons are good. At least we have a film of a genre that can be compared in terms of special effect, superhero genre which until now is nonexistent”.
No Jadoo in music
This time around, Rajesh Roshan and Salim-Sulaiman’s composition is just about decent. Raghupati Raghav and Dil Tu Hi Bataa are currently playing on the radio channels but would the music be able to recreate the magic of Koi… Mil Gaya?
Hrithik the dancer
“Competition is healthy. It is the only place where people push you to excel,” said Roshan. “It’s not about perfecting your steps. Dance is an emotion expressed through body and I enjoy it no matter what!”
