The series continues ... Maria E. Kallukaren shows a more fun side to educators in the UAE

Teacher: Professor Abdullah Abonamah
Designation: Professor and Director, Institute of Technological Innovation
Institute: Zayed University

I love: Reading, gardening, walking and my Persian rugs.

Abdullah Abonamah, a Libyan, has spent most of his life in the United States - "I was educated there, met my wife there, had my children there". Until he came home to Dubai five years ago ...

"It represents the best of both worlds [the East and the West]. I am close to my roots, can speak my language freely. The experience has enriched both my wife and me," he says.

My interests

  • Reading: "The written word is the centre of my universe. I read 50 to 100 pages a day."
  • My plants: "I used to have a lovely garden in the US ... here I have an in-house garden, a variety of ferns and plants from various parts of the world."
  • My Persian rugs: "My wife and I own seven. I believe it is a piece of history, a link to the past, some of the designs haven't changed in thousands of years."

What his student says
"He challenges a student's mind and teaches us how to think. He is passionate about what he does and transfers that to his students."
- May Al Taei, who studied Research Methodology and Information Systems and e-Business with Professor Abonamah
