Filipino folk singer Freddie Aguilar surprised everyone when he made a scathing remark about Charice Pempengco and Ariel Pineda's international success.

He said Mariah Carey was right when she said Pinoys are like monkeys. Carey, who was misquoted in an interview years back, has since apologised for the remark noting that Philippines has produced a great crop of talents in the entertainment industry.

So it came as a shock when Aguilar referring to Pempengco's and Pineda's success abroad, said: "It's true what Mariah said. We are monkeys in the sense that we ape other artists, and do not come up with anything original."

But we wonder if Pempengco - who is making waves under the guidance of David Foster and Oprah Winfrey - and Pineda - the lead singer of the popular rock band Journey - are any less Filipinos for singing American music?
