Soft, light and thoroughly romantic, tiered chiffon and fine cotton dresses are a few of the great things defining fashion in 2008 Spring/Summer. As the sun has started to shine, ankle length dresses are rising in popularity.

This season's long dresses are not just for evening glam; they are specifically designed for casual day wear. The key to conquer this summer's trend toward long dresses has to do with the soft, cool breeze, tropics, flowers, ocean, beach and sand. "Be inspired by Sarah Moon's portraits and play your own style in neutrals like sand, rose, khaki tones and bright prints" said Khosa Chambers, a leading fashion director.

In order to pull off a long dress this summer, you must rely on a set of guidelines to make sure you are handling this trend well.

You'll want something that screams, "Summer is here and I'm enjoying it!" so your dress has got to be roomy but structured and long. The length of the dress must be to the ankle or an inch or two below for best sweeping factor results. So above the ankle should be avoided.

  • Paint on summer with graphics and colour! This is one of the more important things to look out for when purchasing your summer long dress. Look for an overall print of floral or any tropical island solids: brown, sea green, ocean blue, sand, etc.
  • To avoid getting lost in the fabric, make sure that your dress has a defined waist, created with either a belt or ruffles that start below the waistline.
  • Lightweight fabrics are the best to wear so choose a dress that is either cotton, rayon or silk chiffon.
  • Sleeveless is always welcome in summer. Halter, spaghetti straps, tie necks, thin to medium-size straps style look great with long dresses.
  • Pair the long dress with wedges, espadrilles or even fresh strappy sandal flats.
  • It's simple, trouble-free, and stylish! Catch on to the breezy silhouette trend right away!
