Nakheel has announced an 1,800-seat theatre at the Palm Jumeirah. Expected to be ready by 2011, the venue will host nearly 450 shows a year. And a permanent fixture at the theatre will be the widely-acclaimed stage show Cirque Du Soleil.

The Quebec-based company is developing a special show for Dubai. However, as a prelude to this, Cirque du Soleil will present their popular show Alegría at Ibn Battuta Mall from March 5 until April 5. The event includes breathtaking performances by artists from nearly 17 countries and some memorable music from Cirque du Soleil's repertoire.

“We are delighted to be welcoming Cirque du Soleil back to Dubai with another breathtaking production after what was a tremendously successful opening season of Quidam in 2007,'' said Robert Lee, Managing Director of Nakheel Investment Projects.

The international cast of 55 acrobats, musicians, singers, clowns and characters will perform their talents over two hours in the all white Big Chapiteau which caters for 2,500 spectators.

Beginning in Montreal, Canada, in 1994, Alegría has visited 65 cities across 17 countries and has seen over 10 million people enjoy the show.

Facts about Alegría

  • Two of the current artists belong to the original cast, having performed in over 54,000 shows

  • More than 1,000 springs hold up the Power Track trampoline … end to end that's 105 meters

  • Alegría travels with a 'village on wheels' that covers an area of 20 000 sq m and is completely self-sufficient for power, water and all essential services. The village includes various offices, a box office, a kitchen and even a school.
