Bollywood sister act: Sibling Revelry
Putting aside the competition tag, our Bollywood sisters have stood by each other through thick and thin. Here's a look at some of the most happening sisters in Tinseltown.
Kapoor Kudos!
Born to the Kapoor manor, Karisma (Lolo) and Kareena (Bebo), broke the rules to be the first Kapoor women in films.
They are the only successful sisters in Bollywood! If Karisma ruled the '90s before gracefully bowing out in 2000 after marrying businessman Sanjay Kapoor, Kareena was a star even before her debut (J.P. Dutta's Refugee), working only with the best. Fida, Khushi, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham and Jab We Met has made her the numero uno actress of today and she apparently charges Rs60 million (Dh4.46 million) per film!
Now if she could add a national award to her repertoire she would equal her elder sister.
Mukherji Mix
Just like mum Tanuja, Mukherji sisters Kajol and Tanisha have always been outspoken.
Kajol ruled Bollywood with hits like Baazigar, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Karan Arjun, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham.
Post marriage to Ajay Devgan she quit films but made a terrific comeback with Fanaa.
But, younger sis Tanisha wasn't so lucky. She debuted opposite Dino Morea in Shhh... but the film bombed. Tanisha's sex appeal in YashRaj's Neal N Nikki also misfired. Of late, she is seeing an NRI businessman and hopes to settle down.
Startling Shettys
Older sister Shilpa played second fiddle to many actresses until she under-went nose surgery and body sculpting.
Younger sis followed in her footsteps – got her nose re-done and was picked by Aditya Chopra for Mohabbatein – her first and only hit. While Shilpa got lucky with Big Brother, Shamita keeps hoping some producer will spot her.
Reddy Riot
While Meghna and Sushama were tall, beautiful and India's top models, younger sis Sameera, later known as India's Jennifer Lopez, was ridiculed for her bulky frame until Musafir happened to her.
Meghna moved to the US and became a huge name there. But Sushama skipped the line by moving into acting.
Roaring Aroras
Malaika Arora-Khan went from model to VJ, item girl to TV host and was successful in everything.
Amrita took the same route but later became an actress. Her hot body failed to make up for her lack of acting skills. Happily married to actor Arbaaz Khan for a decade, Malaika has proved that married women can have a successful career in showbiz.
Amrita, on the other hand, recently tied the knot with businessman Shakeel Ladak and is still open to films.
Sen-sations
While Riya followed in the footsteps of actress-mum Moon Moon Sen and played on her sex appeal, Raima focused more on performances à la grandmother Suchitra Sen.
No wonder Raima won accolades for her histrionics in Rituparno Ghosh's film Choker Bali and Pradeep Sarkar's Parineeta. Riya, on the other hand, is best remembered for her controversial MMS with ex-boyfriend Ashmit Patel. BM
