More than $1 million worth of jewels due to be lent to movie stars at the Cannes film festival were stolen from a hotel room in the French Riviera town, a police source said.

The jewels were in the safe of the room rented by an employee of Chopard, a luxury jeweller, the source said on condition of anonymity.

The incident at the hotel in central Cannes took place on Thursday night as the festival got under way, drawing thousands of movie stars, film industry executives and journalists to the fabled resort.
