Dubai: Dubai unveiled its first State of Energy Report: Dubai 2014, to tackle the energy issues and sustainable future today.

The report focuses on sustainable development as well as green technologies and carbon reduction. The report says the UAE will reduce its dependance on gas by 40 per cent by 2030.

Speaking at the launch, His Highness Shaikh Ahmad Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Supreme Council of Energy and Chairman of Dubai Expo 2020, said, “Energy is one of the main components for sustainable development and the foundation for a positive environment that encourages collaboration, partnership, creativity, and innovation. Today, we are pleased to launch the first edition of the State of Energy Report 2014, which describes our way forward to build a green future for generations to come.”

According to Dubai Intregrated Energy Strategy 2030 gas will provide 71 per cent of Dubai’s total power output, nuclear energy will provide 12 percent and clean coal will provide 12 per cent, will solar energy will provide 5 per cent. Energy consumption will be reduced by 30 per cent.The first phase of Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, which is to be inaugurated today, will provide an additional 13 megawatts of solar power. When completed in 2030, it will provide 1,000 megawatts. Also, the regulations of green building in Dubai will become mandatory in 2014, for both the public and private sector.

The plans also says that 50 percent of Dubai Expo 2020 exhibition would come from from renewable sources of energy on-site. Dubai Expo 2020 will showcase the first large-scale application of Building-Integrated Photo Voltaic and Solar technology setting a new benchmark for future mega-events. Additional sustainability criteria have been set to monitor carbon footprint, achieve neutral water balance and manage material recycling and reuse. For example, 30% of the building materials used for the Expo are to be made from recycled aggregate content.

Helal Al Marri, Director General of Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing, CEO of Dubai World Trade Centre and a member of the Higher Committee for Dubai Expo 2020, said, “Sustainability has informed every aspect of Dubai Expo 2020: from our overarching philosophy to the physical design of the site and infrastructure. We will deploy the most innovative solutions for environmental management and energy generation, as demonstrated by our aim of producing 50% of the Expo’s operational energy requirements from renewable sources on site.”
