New Fisker Ocean set to battle Tesla Model Y and Ford Mustang Mach-E as electric vehicle war hots up

It has been over a year since Henrik Fisker tweeted a teaser image of his new electric crossover and now finally, we get to see it in all its glory. Called the Ocean and due out in 2022, it will be a direct Tesla Model Y and Ford Mustang Mach-E rival.

Fisker promises the newbie which will be available in either two- or all-wheel-drive configurations and with a powertrain consisting of a lithium-ion battery pack with a capacity of about 80 kilowatt-hours and an electric motor mounted over each axle - will have a maximum range of 300 miles (482km) and will have a starting price of $37,499. It should be able to hit 100kph in just 2.9 seconds.

It doesn’t look anything like the stylish Karma though but does have some fancy design cues such as turn signal repeaters integrated into the D-pillars, and solar panels in the roof.

The cabin takes a minimalist approach, a bit like the Model Y and Mustang Mach-E with a large infotainment system being the dominant presence. A smaller screen, the digital instrument cluster, is located behind the steering wheel. It features two wireless chargers and a head-up display which, strangely, can display music lyrics while a song is playing. Hmm, that wouldn’t be distracting at all…

Aside from the karaoke, it packs five haptic buttons which give users quick access to the home screen, AC and audio. There is a "California Mode" feature which turns the crossover almost into an open-air vehicle (it lowers the six side windows, drops the rear window and opens the sunroof to let the breeze in) and although Fisker has not mentioned any autonomous capabilities we note that the grille has a noticeable radar in it.

The chunky compact electric crossover will offer up to 300 miles of range.

The Ocean will be a direct rival to the Ford Mustang Mach-E. For the first time in 55 years, Ford is expanding the Mustang family, bringing the famous pony into the electric age with the all-new, all-electric SUV.

When it arrives in late 2020, Ford Mustang Mach-E will be available with standard and extended-range battery options with either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive powered by permanent magnet motors.

Equipped with an extended-range battery and rear-wheel drive, Mach-E has a targeted EPA-estimated range of at least 300 miles. In extended-range all-wheel-drive configurations, Mach-E is targeting 332 horsepower.

Making its debut in the Mach-E is the next-generation SYNC communications and entertainment system. The touchscreen is a whopping 15.5in!

The Ocean will also go up against the Tesla Model Y - an all-electric, mid-size SUV designed for maximum versatility and safety. Tesla Model Y will start at $39,000 for the Standard Range version, and will also come in Long Range, Dual-Motor All-Wheel Drive, and Performance variants.

Tesla Model Y is spacious enough to carry seven adults and their gear and offers leading range, superior performance, and the most advanced technology.

Model Y Standard Battery will have 230 miles of range, while Model Y Long Range will be able to travel up to 300 miles on a single charge.
