Ferrari has unveiled the SF90 Spider, the drop-top version of the SF90 Stradale. As Maranello’s first production plug-in hybrid spider, the SF90 boasts extraordinary figures, including a combined output of 1,000 horsepower, 0-100kph acceleration in 2.5 seconds, 0-200kph in 7.0 seconds and top speed of 340kph.

The SF90 Spider has a plug-in hybrid architecture that features a V8 turbo engine, an 8-speed dual clutch automatic transmission, the RAC-e electric front axle with two independent electric motors that also provide all-electric propulsion, and an F1-style MGUK electric motor located at the rear between the engine and the gearbox.

A retractable hard top was chosen instead of a soft cover to ensure optimal noise insulation and protection from the elements when raised, and to prevent deforming at high speeds. Ferrari says the RHT is so compact, simple and light it can be actioned in just 14 seconds and can be deployed when the car is on the move.

The retractable roof takes up just 100 litres of space rather than the 150-200 litres required by a traditional system. The use of aluminium in its construction also means that it is around 40 kg lighter than a conventional retractable hard top.

The SF90 Spider can be specced for track use with the Assetto Fiorano pack that includes a list of upgrades that set it apart from the standard car, including Multimatic shock absorbers derived from Ferrari’s GT racing experience and optimised for track use. Other features include high performance materials (such as carbon-fibre and titanium) that shave 21 kg off the car’s weight, a carbon-fibre rear spoiler and road-homologated Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres designed to improve track performance.

Cabin instrumentation is now mostly digital with all the screens going completely black when the car is not running, adding to the interior’s minimalist look. The central instrument cluster comprises a single 16-inch screen, which is curved towards the driver, emphasizing the wraparound cockpit effect.
