Gulf News reader Madiha Ahmad came across litter in a smart shelter in Deira.

A few days ago, when I was passing by the Baniyas Square Metro Station in Deira area, Dubai, I saw a horrific sight in one of the bus shelters operated by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

There was all kinds of litter, like plastic bags, disposable cups, straws and tissue papers, strewn under and around the seats. It was really disheartening to know how inconsiderate we are; despite the fact that there was a trash can located just a few steps from the shelter, no one bothered to dispose the trash properly. If only we could take the extra trouble to ensure that trash is disposed properly, things would be better in our environment.

This area is regularly visited by tourists. We should spare a moment to think about the kind of impression we are creating about the city and its residents. The authorities have not only provided state of the art airconditioned buses, but has also made covered smart bus shelters for our comfort. The least we can do is keep them clean and tidy. You never know, the next user could be you.
