Selfless service is not an act to satisfy others and gain privileges. Nor is it something that we do in addition to what we do every day. It is something that has to be part and parcel of our day-to-day life. Such a sense of service provides fulfilment and peace of mind.

Narayana Seva is a private group of families that is engaged in serving the labour community in Dubai by providing those in need with food rations every month. The children of these families earnestly join in the collection and distribution of food.

Here in the Gulf countries children are brought up with the comfort of resources such that they never get to feel the pangs of hunger and poverty. They are not aware of the feeling of loneliness that many among the unfortunate labour community go through. The experience of seeing closely the hardships of fellow brethren is the opening up of the inner eye to the realities of life.

Our young service coordinator Adarsh Biju, who is a Grade 10 pupil, had the following to say about his experience: "The attitude for helping out the poor and needy is always a great gift. Through service we come to know that there is a life outside of our comfort zone. Normally we complain about small and trivial things, whereas the people we meet are happy with what they have and try to make the best out of it. Helping them not only brings them happiness, but also great satisfaction to us. We also understand that we need not be part of any group or organisation to help the poor. All we need is to have the mentality, attitude and the will to take the initiative. We will be happy, at peace with ourselves and have the zest to do well in all walks of life. Much more than that, we are now thankful for what we have and strive to work harder for our goals in life."

Through this report we hope to make more people aware of those people in need and motivate readers to do good things from their side.
