The scene in the accompanying photograph is a daily one, behind a busy business centre in Al Arouba Street in Sharjah. This centre is a big office complex and has five clinics with about 50 doctors, plenty of consulting firms, a popular restaurant and four party halls, which are a favourite for hosting parties and get-togethers. There is also a residential building attached to it.
For all of these businesses and homes there is an open area at the rear of the centre for parking. However, the daily chaos in the area makes it extremely difficult to drive here and thus accidents are very common. I also work in this building and experience a great deal of frustration when trying to park, as no traffic rules are followed; only the ‘might is right’ rule seems to prevail here. This area needs a one-way road to be built so that traffic can move more smoothly and the number of accidents will decrease.
