Abu Dhabi

A few months ago, I was awarded for a community report regarding littering that was published in Gulf News. Awards are good, but the real issue of littering still remains.

Each time the Municipality cleans up the industrial area in Abu Dhabi’s Musaffah area, the very next day, people throw garbage in the same spot again. What baffles me is that there are two bins just 20 metres away, on each side of the dump (as seen in photograph).

I personally think that the time has come for perpetrators to be taught a tough lesson. An example needs to be set. I think the Municipality should send inspectors to such areas and catch the people who litter red handed, taking strict measures to punish them. It seems harsh, but it needs to be done so a strong message is sent out.

The people who dirty the industrial areas are capable of doing the same when they arrive in the city. There are people living in the city who are equally responsible for dirtying their own environment. Corrective measures need to be taken and this plague needs to be pulled out from its roots.

A drive should be organised by the civil authorities to send municipal inspectors to spots that are commonly littered, such as outside tea shops, restaurants and in industrial areas. They need to take stern action against those who litter, on the spot, so that it isn’t repeated. I hope my message reaches the people who have the power to make it happen. My fight to keep UAE clean will continue.
