The Year of Giving was a golden opportunity for all of us to truly realise the depth and meaning of giving. The year may have come to an end, but the practice of giving should continue. A group of students from different schools worked on environmental, social and voluntary events through the year. But, with the new year, we thought of doing something different and brought the ‘Share the Warmth’ initiative to life where we focus on donating blankets to the needy.

We chose blankets in particular because of its immense value to the needy in the winter. The idea of donating blankets originated from one of my own unforgettable experiences. While I was on a trip, I saw some workers shivering in the cold because of the unexpected change in the weather. I immediately thought of helping such people and ‘Share the Warmth’ with blankets.

We got together and gathered as many blankets as we could, thanks to our friends and neighbours, who appreciated and supported our objective to extend a helping hand to all those in need. After collecting, we donated them to the Al Ihsan Charity Association in Ajman, a humanitarian organisation through which the donations will reach those in need.

Meghana Senthil Kumar, a student from Sharjah and a participant of the event, said: “While donating in general is a substantial requisite, donating blankets in particular is donating warmth, something that one cannot usually give to other people. The initiative was to donate blankets, both for protection against the cold this winter and spread warmth to many hearts with the beginning of another new year”.

Through this initiative, I believe to have inspired the minds of the participants as well as readers to contribute their bit with generosity and benevolence towards the betterment of the world.
