Delivery vehicles park on pavements, leaving no space for pedestrians to walk, Gulf News reader Venkatesan Sundar says.

As a resident of Al Majaz 1 in Sharjah, behind Buhaira Corniche, I have noticed that delivery motorcycles from fast food outlets in the area are being parked on the pavements and in front of building entrances. This is clearly evident in the pictures, as well.

Of late, I find that the number of bikes parked in this manner are gradually increasing. Hence, they are now being parked at the entrances of adjacent buildings, too! This causes a lot of inconvenience to pedestrians, who find no space to walk on the pavements. The pedestrians are thus forced to walk right on the road, even when there is heavy traffic, with cars passing by. As a result, accidents are just waiting to happen. Not only that, parking in this way spoils the image of the surrounding area.

I request fast food outlets to purchase paid parking spots for their motorcycles so that they can park them there. If they fail to do so, I urge the authorities to take necessary action to ensure that the bikes are no longer parked on pavements.

Just like how the owners of cars pay for parking their vehicles in paid parking zones, so, too, must these bikes be neatly parked, in paid parking slots only.

I believe it is the responsibility of each member of society to follow the rules, for the benefit of all.
