Sharjah: On June 14, my dance group called “Prasitham” got the chance to perform at an event held at the American University of Sharjah’s auditorium. I always wish to raise environmental awareness at events. I prepared a script, placards and also displayed my art at the venue to encourage children to practice upcycled art. We informed the audience about some green tips to follow in their daily lives.

The participants were Nityashri Sankaran, Divyashri Sankaran, Neha Swaminathan, Lohitha Swaminathan, Prasitha Prasanna, Rahitha Prasanna, Ankita James and Nitisha Nandakumar – all youth between the age of 8-15 years of age from various schools in the UAE.

The earth does not belong to us but we belong to it. We need to take positive steps to protect Nature and the planet.

The theme for World Environment Day according to the United Nations was sustainable consumption and production. The slogan for the theme was, ‘seven billion dreams, one planet, consume with care’. Imagine if each of the seven billion people planted a tree on a special day, how much greenery would we have around us?

At the event, we also gave tips on saving water, energy, resources and trees and motivated all to practice the three Rs in our daily life - reduce, reuse and recycle. We recommended the use of alternate sources of energy like wind, solar and water energy.

We insisted that none of us can change the past, but all of us can change the future.

It is most important to spread the word and create awareness whenever you can and as much as you can. Do your bit as it is our obligation to try and make a difference to the planet. We continuously take from the planet and it is our turn to give back.
