Dubai

When commuting from Jebel Ali to Bur Dubai on either Al Khail Road or Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Road, we often spot buses carrying workers to or from their destination. I have noticed that majority of times, they are being transported in buses without any airconditioning. The condition of these buses is so bad, especially because they are being used in this hot and humid weather.

My colleague, Yuliia Kyrychenko, has also come across similar issues.

She said: “On my way home from work, I regularly notice at least five buses with workers who are transported without any airconditioning. The outside temperature these days ranges around 40 Degrees Celcius, if not more! And all the workers had were opened windows. How can they sit in such buses in such hot weather, especially after working outside the whole day?”

She pointed out that the buses are in very bad condition and are usually very old. Some buses, we noticed, have internal fans which are located above window seats. But, those are not good enough to beat the heat in the UAE.

“I suggest that owners of the transporting companies install and make workable airconditioning at least for the summer period,” Kyrychenko added.

Additionally, I have come across reports in Gulf News about bus accidents due to tyre bursts. How well are companies taking the necessary precautions to take care of its staff? Has life become so cheap that in the urge to reduce costs basic human rights cannot be provided?

When these unsung heroes carry out their work in the outdoors, where do they store their food? It may get spoiled due to exposure to extreme heat. Are they properly hydrated?

UAE has always been in the forefront to implement stringent measures for the rights of people but it seems like many companies are ignoring such messages.
