The book ‘stresses on being self-reliant’

Tammara Webber’s Easy is a new Young Adult novel, which I feel is a must read. It is a mature, contemporary read that deals with serious issues like rape, sexual assault, stalking and violence. It also stresses on the point of being self-reliant and when such situations arise, how to tackle them.
Easy also deals with a common issue of girls who lose their identity to conceited boyfriends. The protagonist leaves her ambition and follows her boyfriend to college, only to get dumped by him two months later. She is distraught by such a turn of events, which also hampers her studies. To make things worse, after a frat party, she is sexually assaulted in the parking lot, but a mysterious stranger saves her from the predator. When the protagonist’s best friend learns about the assault, she signs them up for self-defence classes.
I felt Webber handled such situations very well, including the element of romance and suspense, making it a quintessential book.
When I read this book, it made me realise that though the book comes in fiction category but the situations stressed in the book aren’t entirely fictional. Women face these scenarios at some point and being a damsel in distress waiting for her knight in shining armour to rescue shouldn’t happen. One should learn to be self-reliant and be able to defend herself in whatever situation she is in.
