DUBAI Many Dubai long-timers consider Carter’s an iconic gastro pub and it’s easy to see why.

The restaurant’s stunning wooden décor not only evokes a cosy colonial charm but an eerie Pharaonic feel as well thanks to a replica of King Tutankhamun’s mummy at the entrance. No points for guessing, the restaurant is themed around the greatest exploit of the legendary English archaeologist and Egyptologist Howard Carter and his 1922 discovery of the tomb of the boy king.

Throw in an old school British pub quiz Monday nights and live performances Wednesdays to Saturdays by Feti Blue & the Blues Train (until the end of this month at least), you get the recipe for the perfect evening out.

Their grub is just as eclectic as the setting. From old British favourites like a Stilton cheese and oven roasted beetroot salad (Dh55) and Cod and Chips (Dh95) to Asian gems like a Goa Prawn Red Curry (Dh55), the one-page menu is as diverse as it gets.

I started off with a Prawn Tempura (Dh55) served with a sweet chili mayo and glazed with sesame sauce. I have never hid the fact that I don’t quite like shellfish, but I couldn’t resist the freshness of these prawns coated in a soft batter. My next pick was one from their Pies section: a Lamb Shepherd’s Pie with Mushrooms (Dh70), made of classic ground lamb served under a bed of mashed potatoes and delectably topped with cheddar cheese gratin. They have a line-up of curries as well and I went for the tried and tested Thai Green Curry (Dh55). Served with long grain Indian rice, it’s a rich, creamy and delightfully fragrant concoction of galangal, coconut milk and lemon grass.

Served with juicy caramelised onions, confit potato and leek compote, their pan seared Salmon Fillet (Dh95) – fresh and tender – too is worth a try as are their grills, especially the one that’s peppered (Dh160) and served with hash brown and buttered spinach. Enjoy it with their amazing peppercorn sauce before ending the evening with the most sinful Chocolate Coulant (Dh35).
